In the United States, the inaugural video game union has been established, welcoming all developers to join its ranks.
The Communication Workers of America (CWA), a prominent union in the US, has declared the formation of the United Videogame Workers (UVW).
UVW-CWA is designed as an open organization, allowing any individual employed in the video game sector within the United States and Canada to become a member, irrespective of their specific role or employment status. According to their official statement, the organization’s primary objective extends beyond community building and solidarity among video game industry workers. It aims to develop significant educational campaigns focused on labor practices within the industry. Initially, the union plans to prioritize informing workers about widespread job cuts and initiating a petition to address this pressing issue.
The concept of establishing a major union independent of any single company was initially discussed in 2018. Subsequently, employees at studios including Activision, Blizzard, Zenimax, SEGA, and others have announced the formation of their own individual union groups.
