Former Canada captain John Davison has been appointed as Italy’s T20 International coach as they aim to qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Italy will participate in the European Regional Finals of the T20 World Cup qualifying tournament in the Netherlands starting in late June. Two teams from this qualifier will advance to the main tournament in early 2026. Participating teams include Netherlands, Scotland, Guernsey, and Jersey.

Davison expressed his excitement and honor in becoming the head coach of the Italian T20 men’s program. He mentioned that he was quickly convinced to join after learning about the players and staff involved.

Davison reminisced about the thrill of qualifying for World Cups as a player for Canada and is eager to experience that again with the Italian team, which he describes as diverse and dedicated.

A highlight of Davison’s World Cup career as a player was his impressive innings of 111 runs off 76 balls against the West Indies in Centurion in 2003.

Since retiring from playing, Davison has worked as a spin-bowling coach and consultant, including with the Australian team. He has worked extensively with prominent players such as Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Swepson, and Matt Kuhnemann.

Davison will collaborate with Italy’s new captain, Joe Burns, a former Queensland and Australian opening batsman. Burns, who qualified to play for Italy through his mother’s heritage, began representing the team in May of last year.

Besides Burns, Ben and Harry Manenti have also played for Italy. Jake Doran and Tim Ward from Tasmania are also potential players for the qualifiers due to their Italian heritage, although they are still awaiting approval. Matthew Fotia, a former Victoria fast bowler, and Jason Ralston, who has represented Australia at the Under-19 level, are also being considered for the team.

Upon being named captain, Burns stated that he is honored to represent Italy and considers it a return to his family’s roots. He believes Italian cricket has significant potential and is enthusiastic about contributing to its growth. He and his teammates are committed to achieving ambitious goals and making their fans proud.
