KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja hug after the victory

India secured their third Champions Trophy title by defeating New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling final held in Dubai. Following the victory, Indian players shared their reactions to the tense match and the triumph.

KL Rahul admitted: “I was really nervous at the end. I can’t say the exact words I used internally! But knowing we still had capable batsmen to come, I remained hopeful we would cross the finish line.”

He further commented on the pressure of high-stakes games: “In crucial moments like these, especially in major finals, maintaining composure is key. It’s challenging, but I’m incredibly happy we won and I contributed to seeing us through this time. I’ve faced similar pressure situations in several games this tournament, which has been valuable preparation for moments like this.”

Rahul reflected on the foundation of their success: “It’s hard to fully express, but it comes down to fundamental cricketing skills honed from our upbringing. We’ve all overcome numerous challenges and faced pressure since we first picked up a bat. The credit goes to first-class cricket and the BCCI for nurturing talent. They provide us with opportunities and platforms to showcase our abilities, to test ourselves under pressure, and to constantly improve.”

Hardik Pandya shared his excitement: “Winning an ICC event, especially the Champions Trophy, is always incredible. I vividly remember the 2017 final where we couldn’t quite finish the job. But I’m extremely pleased with our performance throughout this tournament and how everyone stepped up and contributed. It was truly fantastic.”

He praised KL Rahul’s match-winning innings: “KL Rahul was brilliant – calm and composed. He chose the perfect moments to take his chances. This is the true KL Rahul. He possesses immense talent, and his batting today was a demonstration of his capabilities.”

Varun Chakravarthy, a surprise inclusion in the squad, expressed his delight: “Being a late addition, I honestly didn’t anticipate such an outcome. It’s a dream come true. The spin in the first innings was minimal, so we had to maintain tight discipline and focus on hitting the stumps.”

Shreyas Iyer conveyed his overwhelming joy: “I’m ecstatic, truly beyond words. This is my first ICC trophy, and I’m quite overwhelmed. Looking around the dressing room and seeing how we’ve performed throughout this tournament, our progress has been simply magnificent.”

Iyer spoke about embracing pressure: “To be honest, I thrive under pressure and challenges. I love those moments. I’ve been getting good starts in the tournament but haven’t converted them into big scores. However, contributing to a team victory is immensely satisfying, and I’m genuinely happy.”

Shubman Gill described his experience: “It felt amazing. For much of the innings, I enjoyed watching Rohit bhai bat. Our opening partnership was crucial. It’s incredibly satisfying, especially after missing out in 2023. Winning this after a streak of ODI victories feels surreal.”

Gill admired Virat Kohli’s influence: “Watching Virat Kohli on TV as a kid and now playing alongside him, witnessing his intensity is phenomenal. It shows us the essence of the game – giving your absolute best. He embodies this both on and off the field.”

Ravindra Jadeja humorously commented on his role: “My batting position often makes me either a hero or nothing! Hardik and KL built a crucial partnership in the last ten overs, as the pitch wasn’t easy for new batsmen. Their partnership shifted the game’s momentum.”

Jadeja highlighted the significance of the win: “This victory means a lot to India. Being part of this team, failing to win tournaments after so many years would be regrettable. Fortunately, in the last two years, we’ve won both the T20 World Cup and now the Champions Trophy, which is fantastic for Indian cricket.”

Kuldeep Yadav, relieved not to bat, said: “Thankfully, I didn’t need to bat! Credit to KL bhai and Jaddu bhai for finishing the game. There are always high expectations when you perform well and enter tournaments as favorites, though I don’t personally believe in the ‘favorites’ tag. We’ve played consistently good cricket, and I dedicate this win to the fans. Rohit bhai’s captaincy and managing four spinners was outstanding. The planning against their batting lineup was crucial.”

Yadav concluded with celebratory plans: “A big party is definitely on the cards, and all of India will be celebrating today!”
