Moeen Ali on Harry Brook’s Potential IPL Ban: ‘It’s Not Harsh, I Agree’

Delhi Capitals’ Harry Brook has withdrawn from the IPL for the second consecutive season for reasons other than injury.

According to new IPL rules, Brook will not be eligible to play or be auctioned in the IPL until 2027, unless there is an exception for injury or medical condition confirmed by his home board.

‘It’s not harsh though, I kinda agree with it,’ Moeen Ali said on the Beard Before Cricket podcast. He believes that players withdrawing and then returning for better financial deals disrupts the league’s dynamics.

Moeen highlighted that Brook’s withdrawal has negatively impacted Delhi Capitals, forcing them to adjust their plans. He supports the ban rule for withdrawals without valid reasons like family emergencies or injuries.

Delhi Capitals, who signed Brook for INR 6.25 crore, were informed of his withdrawal through the ECB. Brook cited the need to ‘recharge after the busiest period’ of his career.

Brook is considered a potential future captain for England’s white-ball teams, possibly influencing his decision to skip the IPL to prepare for major upcoming series, including a home series against India and the Ashes in Australia.

Moeen noted that other England players have previously withdrawn from the IPL to manage their workload ahead of important international commitments. He suggests Brook might be prioritizing rest and preparation, especially with potential captaincy responsibilities.

The IPL’s new rule reflects franchises’ frustration with late withdrawals by overseas players that disrupt team dynamics.

This is the second consecutive year Brook has withdrawn from the IPL. Last year, he withdrew due to a family bereavement.

Adil Rashid also agreed with Moeen, stating that the rule is clear and players are aware of the consequences of withdrawing without valid reasons.

Rashid emphasized the rule aims to prevent last-minute withdrawals that disrupt team dynamics, a problem that has been ongoing in the IPL.
