Sony Pictures has begun production on a new film in the Resident Evil franchise. Company representatives confirmed this news to Deadline.

Zach Cregger, known for the horror film “Barbarian,” will direct the movie. “I’ve been a huge fan of these games for decades, and the opportunity to bring this amazing work to life is a real honor for me,” commented the director. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten (“John Wick 4”).

The new Resident Evil film is intended to reboot the franchise. The plot is expected to bring the series back closer to the original horror games. The film is scheduled to premiere on September 18, 2026.

The Resident Evil franchise began in 1996 and includes 29 games, including remakes and spin-offs. The first film in the series was released in 2002. The film adaptation includes six movies starring Milla Jovovich, which have grossed over $1.2 billion at the box office. Additionally, there was a separate film based on the games, “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,” which was intended to be a reboot closer to the source material but was a box office failure.
