Wayne Madsen has agreed to return as Derbyshire’s captain for a second stint and will lead the team in the upcoming County Championship season.
The experienced batter takes over from David Lloyd, having previously held the captaincy from 2012 to 2016.
Mickey Arthur, Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket, commented, ‘Wayne has consistently demonstrated strong leadership qualities and is a respected figure in our dressing room. I am very pleased that he will be leading our team in 2025.’
Arthur added, ‘His experience is incredibly valuable. He has already led the team to promotion as captain in the past, and I am eager to see his strategies unfold on the field.’
‘Wayne always leads by example, setting high standards in training and demonstrating great professionalism. I am confident he will embrace this role with pride and enthusiasm.’
In the 2024 season, despite Derbyshire finishing at the bottom of Division Two, Madsen was the club’s top run-scorer in the Championship, amassing 1005 runs at an average of 50.25. This marked the seventh time in 12 seasons that he has surpassed 1000 runs.
To date, Madsen has accumulated 14,601 first-class runs for Derbyshire, ranking him ninth in the club’s history.
Madsen stated, ‘It is a true honor to captain Derbyshire once again. I understand the significance of representing this great county and its supporters, and I am deeply proud to lead the team on the field.’
‘David [Lloyd] has done an excellent job in establishing a solid foundation for me to build upon. While last season’s results were not always in our favor, he and Mickey, with his extensive experience and knowledge, have cultivated a strong sense of unity and resilience within the squad – qualities that I intend to continue to develop this year.’
‘I am honored to lead this team and excited about what we can achieve under Mickey’s guidance. With the talent and character within this squad, we are determined to win matches and bring success to our supporters.’
